The USEA National Meeting brought 2017 to a close in style.
A visit to the Aquarium of the Pacific, excellent speakers, and our Area VI Annual meeting and Awards added up to an educational and exciting weekend.
The Area VI video “Local Rules Prevail” was a hit at the Thursday night welcome party. The documentary was an entertaining look back at how Area VI developed and the people who devoted their lives and passion to the sport. I want to thank Kay Hitch for her unrelenting work to get people to share their pictures and their memories, Brian Sabo for his eloquent narration and the Ravenscrofts and “Ride on Video” for the cinematography.
The Area turned out for the Friday luncheon where we received valuable and timely information on “Disaster Preparedness” from Chris Bearden, and from Dr Noel Dybdal of the Veterinary Emergency Response Team. Information Dr Dybdal presented can be reviewed at (http://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/ceh/publications/previous_issues.cfm; http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/e8f9c6af#/e8f9c6af/11) and also the HALTER PROJECT website (https://www.halterproject.org/make-a-plan).
It will be valuable to review the information and formulate a series of evacuation plans that will help you and yours when the next disaster arises.
A list of Area VI award winners can be found at ( provide the link here for the leaderboard).
If you are an award winner and were unable to attend you may pick up your awards at the FCHP or you can pay to have your awards shipped to you. Contact Stefanie Gladen at email@example.com to arrange for shipping.
For those of you that won trophies. We will arrange to ship them to you. Due to the fires we were unable to get them to the meeting.
The speakers throughout the weekend were varied and educational . We want to thank Jan Gardner who’s generous donation, in honor of her novice competition horse “Jumpin’ Jacck Flash”, made the ‘Form to Function Hoof Anatomy ‘ talk by Bill Merfy possible. We are sorry that Drs Nick Huggons and Korin Portenza were unable to speak but we are thankful for their help and care of the thoroughbred horses rescued for the San Luis Rey racetrack. https://www.gofundme.com/help-for-san-luis-rey-downs
The USEA year end awards dinner highlighted the accomplishments of several Area VI professionals and volunteers.
The 2017 USEA Adult Amateur of the year went to Frankie Theirot Stutes. She received the Col. Allen D. Smith Memorial Trophy and $1,000 provided by Stackhouse and Ellis Saddles.
Mackenna Shea of Temecula California was awarded the Courtney Reeves Award for Sportsmanship. Always approachable Mackenna is giving back to the sport.
The Charles Owen Technical Merit Award, given for safe cross country riding, was presented to Junior rider Ellie Leonard.
We look forward to 2018 being a year with as many accomplishments and causes for celebration.
